Our ancient rushees divided our hindu time scale based on the planet SUN movement into two types of kaalams.

1. UTTARAYANA PUNYA KAALAM
2. DAKSHINAYANA KAALAM

In uttarayan punya kaalam planet sun runs from MAKARA RAASI or CAPRICORN SIGN to KARKATAKA RAASI or CANCER SIGN.

In dakshinayana kaalam planet sun runs from KARKATAKA RAASI or CANCER SIGN to MAKARA RAASI or CAPRICORN SIGN.

The time at which sun enters the sign CAPRICORN is the beginning of this great uttarayana punya kaalam.

SO WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PUNYA KAALAM?

Our VEDAS saying that this is the holy period in which our elders (parents, beloved one's who passed away) who died came down to the earth along with the MUKKOTI DEVATALU (angles). Every aatma searches for their succeders to pass their blessings. These great aatmas stay here for entire UTTARAYANA PUNYA KAALAM and they get back to their punya lokas with the beginning of the DAKSHINAYANA KAALAM.

That is why the great BHEESHMA left his life in the uttarayana punya kaalam. Upto this uttarayana kaalam he waited on AMPA SAYYA ( a bed made up of arrows) and he left his life by his SVACHANDA MARANA VARAM .

Another example like this we can see in the life of great singer SREE TYAGAYYA. He also left his life in this great uttarayana punya kaalam. These great people left their lives in this great holy period beacuse the doors of heaven will be left open during this time.

SO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IN THIS PERIOD?

This is the holy period which is suitable to perform various PUNYA KARYAMS like

• Anna daanam's (poor feeding) on the name of our beloved one's, parents
• Vastra daanam (cloth donation)
• Various graha saanti puja's for our beloved one's who are suffering from jataka graha dosha's

SO WHAT WILL BE THE RESULT?

• If we do anna daanam, vastra daanam during this holy period it gives aatma santhi to our parents, beloved one's who are not present with us. So that their unfilled desires will be fulfilled and they will move to next janma
• If we perform graha saanti puja's for our beloved one's who are suffering from jataka graha dosham's, the graha dosham's will be cleared so easily because we have all devata's here.

WHAT IS THE TIME OF UTTARAYANA PUNYA KAALAM THIS YEAR?

This year the great uttarayana punya kaalam is started on

14 - jan - 2009 by 24.18 IST and it ends on 14- jul - 2009

SO HOW & WHERE CAN I PERFORM THESE POOR FEEDING, CLOTH DONATION etc?

You can do this punya kaarya's at your residence by making annadanam to the poor. Give them cloths at the end of annadanam.
